Public Works Property Maintenance

City Property

Various land parcels totaling more than 660 acres are under city ownership and held for a variety of reasons. While these parcels are not a part of the formal park system, most are open to the public for passive recreation. They provide green space, wildlife habitat, and places for quiet contemplation or childhood adventures in neighborhoods throughout the community while supporting city operations. Maintenance required for public health and safety is provided by the Public Works department, as needed. It includes trash collection, mowing, removal of dangerous trees, etc. To report maintenance needed at one of these parcels, contact the Public Works department by calling 906-228-0444 or by emailing Public Works at

Private Property

The department is also charged with enforcing the City's Long Grass and Weed Ordinance and the City's Tree Ordinance which require private property owners to maintain the vegetation on their property to minimum standards for public health and safety. Failure to comply may lead to a violation notice from the department and abatement or corrective action by city forces for which the private property owner will be financially liable.

Other property maintenance ordinances are enforced by the Fire Department and the Office of City Assessor.
